What if I am not sure I want my child to do band?
Remember when your children wouldn’t eat the food you made for them? You always said, “Try it before you decide you don’t like it.” Music is the same way. Your child should sign up for band even if you or they are unsure. If at some point you decide that music is not for you, drop the class. It is much easier to drop something after trying it, than to join late when everyone else has already started and has learned so much.
What if I don't know anything about music?
That’s ok! I will teach your child everything they need to know, step by step. We will start with how to assemble and care for the instrument and move on to reading notes and rhythms, I will guide your child through the process. All that is needed from you is an enthusiastic attitude, encouragement and patient ears when your child comes home and makes their first sound.
What instrument should my child play?
The answer depends on a variety of things, but in the end, it is most important that they play something that they enjoy. Normally we have an instrument testing and rental day to help guide your child to the right instrument. More information will be given out once the registration form is submitted to Ms. Pointer. I will help guide your child based on their musical interests, physical make-up, and instrument availability. Together we will find the instrument that your child will not only enjoy but will give them the best chance of musical success.
What are the costs?
We have a yearly band fee of $30 at NLMS. The cost of an instrument will largely depend on what instrument your child chooses to play, if you already own an instrument, and if you choose to rent a new or used instrument. On our instrument testing and rental day, Gadsden Music (our instrument supplier and instrument repair company) will be present to help you get started. Usually rentals range between $35 to $70 a month. All instruments not being rented or purchased through Gadsden Music should be run by Ms. Pointer. With instruments, if the price sounds too good to be true, you might not be getting the best quality so please let me help you choose a durable brand! If financial constraints prevent you from being able to do this, please contact me and allow me to help. We will not let instrument availability or financial constraints keep your child from participating.
Can I be in sports and in band?
Absolutely! We have quite a few students who play football, basketball, softball, and other sports as well as students who are on the dance team and cheer team. I fully believe middle school is the time to try new activities, sports, and clubs to see what you like the most. If there ever is a schedule conflict, all students need to do is let me know in advance so that the coaches and I can find a solution. We have many students who are successful at doing both sports and band.
